Fantasia Suspendida
2025
Mixed media Exterior Installation-Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Acrylic, Resin and Rope
Suspended Fantasy examines how memory reshapes place through distance and longing. Rather than preserving an image intact, memory amplifies and transforms it, altering scale, atmosphere, and meaning. Displacement gives rise to a diasporic condition in which identity is reconstructed through nostalgia and lived experience.
The installation draws from images and sounds rooted in Puerto Rican culture, reconfiguring them into a sensory landscape that evokes the island’s Central Mountain Range as an idealized territory shaped by memory. Deep green tones, shifting silhouettes of flora and fauna, the continuous call of the coquí, and suspended hammocks create an immersive environment that references both place and pause.
Articulated hanging elements repeat and contain the coquí within chromatic cubes that function as mnemonic devices. At times crystalline and precise, at others blurred and distorted, these forms reflect the instability of memory and the effects of distance.
Ultimately, Suspended Fantasy invites an intimate encounter between memory and presence, questioning what remains tangible when place is recalled from afar.
